Proposed bill OKs guns in schools
The Arizona Republic - Jan. 26, 2008 12:00 AM
Individuals with a concealed-weapons permit would be allowed to bring their guns onto school
grounds under a measure introduced Friday at the Arizona Legislature. The proposal, Senate Bill
1214, would exempt concealed-carry permit holders from a state law that bars individuals from
knowingly carrying deadly weapons onto school property. If it becomes law, the measure would
allow teachers and anyone else with a valid permit to carry their weapon onto the grounds of any
public or private K-12 school, college or university ...

A lesson in opportunity
East Valley Tribune – 01/27/2008, 01:57 am
Madam Governor laid out her State of the State earlier this month, with her annual fodder
for antagonists. We do love the democratic process, don't we? One particular proposal on
her list offers remarkable opportunity, if frontline bureaucrats are not afraid of being great.
Dan Anderson, assistant executive director for institutional analysis at the Arizona Board of
Regents, says a board report shows nearly 50 percent...

The New York Times wants you to know that legislators in Arizona are mean to illegal immigrants
trying to go to the state's schools on the cheap. The Times wants you to imagine that Arizona's new
anti-illegal laws are oppressing those poor, illegal immigrant students that come into Arizona
expecting to get all sorts of loans and financial breaks just because.

Arizona Daily Star - January 26, 2008
For many small biotech companies, licensing technology means success. Tucson-based Nuvogen
Research LLC hit another milestone this month after licensing its newest device — a fully automated
micro-plate washer. The washer, known as "Squirt," will be manufactured and sold by MatriCal Inc., a
Washington-based lab-instrument supplier. Scientists Stephen Felder and Richard Kris spent three
years developing the product for their consulting company, which is focused on creating technology to
aid in drug discovery research. Felder and Kris are partners and the sole employees of Nuvogen,
based at a UA lab.

UMC, region's only Level 1 center, could lose that status
Arizona Daily Star
- January 27, 2008
Could University Medical Center lose its Level 1 status as a top-performing trauma center? That is
the very real fear simmering among UMC trauma officials, as they continue to battle a devastating
shortage of trauma surgeons. The trauma center has been operating with a patchwork trauma
team for much of the past year, after three trauma surgeons, including the trauma director, resigned
last spring. That reduced the team to only two full-time trauma surgeons, aided by two part-time
trauma surgeons who fly in for two-week stints from Phoenix and New York. General surgeons are
pulled in from the main hospital to fill in...

Task force set to study tuition-rate process
Arizona Daily Star - January 26, 2008
A new statewide task force is charged with making the process used to set university tuition rates
less contentious and more predictable. The Arizona Board of Regents Friday voted to establish the
task force, which came directly out of tuition proposals student government leaders brought to the
board last semester. The main goal of the task force is to make stronger connections between tuition
and fee levels, the overall financial needs of the universities, financial aid procedures and the
development of budget requests delivered to the governor and the Legislature.

Regents support governor's budget for education
Arizona Daily Star - January 26, 2008
Christine M. Thompson was not the bearer of good news when she spoke to the Arizona Board of
Regents here Friday. She spoke about budget recommendations and the proposed legislation from
the Arizona Legislature. While Gov. Janet Napolitano wants to exempt universities from any cuts to
address hard economic times, the chairmen of the House and Senate appropriations committees
have a scalpel in hand, said Thompson, ABOR's assistant executive director for governmental affairs.
The chairmen's options for solving the budget crisis, Thompson said, ...

Education Enigma
Tucson Weekly - January 24, 2008
After earning a bachelor's degree from the UA with a stellar grade-point average a few years ago,
Calli Johnston decided to become a schoolteacher. But Johnston--who requested her real name
not be used in this story--would later discover that her great GPA was a handicap, not an asset.
Employed by a local school district as a long-term substitute teacher at a middle school, Johnston
last year learned about a new opportunity offered by Pima Community College. The Teacher
Preparation Program Internship would boost Johnston's pay ...
