Obama challenges ASU grads in Wed. commencement speech
By Dan Nowicki, Anne Ryman and Ronald J. Hansen. More than 60,000 people waited for hours in the broiling sun Wednesday to hear President Barack Obama's eloquent message to Arizona State University's graduating class - and his witty response to a lingering controversy over the school's decision not to give him an honorary degree. Obama, who took the stage at Sun Devil Stadium shortly before 8 p.m., urged the 9,267 graduates to stand up to the challenging times by rejecting traditional status symbols as they build their own "body of work," a riff on ASU's decision to withhold an honorary degree because the relatively new commander-in-chief had yet to establish a large enough body of work.

Just a few years after his national television debut, at age 14 Singh was enrolling at Arizona State University.

Water Expensive, Tough To Find At ASU Graduation
By Sarah Buduson. Some ASU students and their guests were angry about the high cost of water bottles at graduation. A 20 oz. bottle cost $3.50. A one liter bottle cost $5.50. It is the same price football fans pay at Sun Devil Stadium. But fans had expected cheaper prices on graduation day, since the university required students and guests to arrive hours before the ceremony.

State lawmakers plug budget hole
By Howard Fischer. State lawmakers voted Wednesday to plug a $650 million hole in this year's budget with a combination of federal stimulus dollars and short-term borrowing. The move, approved by both the Republican controlled House and Senate along party lines, relies primarily on delaying $300 million public school aid payments and $100 million to the three universities -- payments that come due in days.

ASU's golf management program 'in limbo'
Laura London considers the time she spent in Arizona State's Professional Golf Management program one of the highlights of her life, and says is would be "sad" if new students don't get to enjoy the same experience. That could happen unless a new program fee is approved by the Arizona Board of Regents, which probably will consider it near the end of this year. In the meantime, enrollment has been frozen.

Sun, warm temps take toll on crowd
By Glen Creno, Sean Holstege and Anne Ryman. The beating sun and temperatures over 100 degrees took a growing toll on graduates and others attending Arizona State University's commencement ceremony Wednesday. Scores of people sought medical attention at tents outside Sun Devil Stadium and supplies of water and ice started to run short inside and out. An extra tent was brought in at the stadium's north parking lot shortly before 5:30 p.m. At the first-aid station in the north end of Sun Devil Stadium, two people were sent to the hospital and at least 20 others have been treated for heat-related dizziness, blisters and nausea, said Dr. Stefanie Schroeder of the Student Health & Wellness Center.

Antivenom for scorpion stings works but lacks FDA approval
By Stephanie Innes. A Mexican-made antivenom cures youngsters of severe nerve poisoning after a bark scorpion sting, but the drug still lacks federal approval and there's no other scorpion antivenom available in the U.S. A study of Tucson children who were stung by bark scorpions and treated with the Mexican-made Anascorp is the subject of an article that will come out in the New England Journal of Medicine today. The small, slender bark scorpion is the most common house visitor of all Arizona scorpions. It's also the most dangerous.

Work Is Never Done, Obama Tells Class
By Peter Baker. President Obama traveled Wednesday to the university that does not think he has done enough to merit an honorary degree and declared that he agreed. Mr. Obama delivered his first commencement address as president at Arizona State University, whose decision not to award him a ceremonial diploma touched off a national furor. He used the controversy to make the point that no one should be satisfied with “the outward markers of success,” either as individuals or as a country.

Volunteer days engage scattered alumni
Alumni service days are fast becoming a rite of spring for colleges and their graduates across the country. At least 10 schools have launched such days in the past two years and plan annual events. Service-day activities vary according to local needs and alums' passions. In their first service days this year, Kent State University alums sorted clothing to hand out in Cleveland and painted the home of an owner in need in Canton.

3 critiques of the president's remarks
The Republic asked two people with unique perspectives to share their impressions of President Barack Obama's commencement address at Arizona State University. Mitchell S. McKinney is a professor at the Department of Communications at the University of Missouri. Rodolfo Espino is a political-science professor at ASU specializing in American politics, racial politics and voting rights. Corey Woods is the first African American elected to the Tempe City Council. He is working toward a master's degree at ASU in education and has taught prospective teachers at the school as well.

Humility makes call for action loud and clear
[Editorial] He never said so explicitly, but Barack Obama on Wednesday night agreed with Arizona State University that it was not yet time for his honorary degree. The president of the United States took a controversial quote that deeply embarrassed the university and used it to theme his challenge to young Americans to get to work remaking the world. ASU spokeswoman Sharon Keeler endured weeks of national ridicule for her well-publicized explanation that President Obama would not get an ASU honorary degree because his “body of work is yet to come.” But Obama clearly wasn't offended. Under the lights of Sun Devil Stadium, he told his countrymen that he, in fact, has much work to do. And so do the rest of us. “Your body of work is never finished,” he said.

By Dave Safier. Right now, Rio Nuevo is at a dangerous crossroads. It's time for me to leave my current life and start living in a post-peak-oil world
According to a recent headline in The Wall Street Journal, "There's No Pill for This Kind of Depression." The New York Times adds, "Has a 'Katrina Moment' Arrived?" The Globe and Mail admits 10 of the 11 recessions since 1941 have been preceded by a spike in the price of oil, and the cover of Newsweek screams, "We Are All Socialists Now." What do these headlines have in common? They all describe the economic predicament arising from the world passing peak oil four years ago, and they merely hint at what's to come.
