Raytheon, Roy Drachman honored for service to universities

(Flagstaff, AZ) -- A member of one of Arizona's pioneer families and one of Arizona's major high-tech manufacturers will be honored for their contributions to Arizona's public universities. The Raytheon Systems Company and Roy Drachman are the winners of the 1999 Arizona Board of Regents Award for outstanding service to higher education. The awards were unanimously approved by the Board yesterday, and will be presented at a ceremony in Tucson in September.

Roy Drachman has supported several programs at the University of Arizona, including the Drachman Institute, which focuses on land and regional development studies, the Roy P. Drachman Center for Disease Prevention and Health promotion at the UA Health Sciences Center, and a scholarship program at the College of Architecture.

Ratheon has supported a variety of programs at UA and Arizona State University over the past 18 years. At UA it has supported the Colleges of Engineering, Optical Sciences, Departments of Chemistry and Physics, and the Arizona Health Science Center's Cancer and Children's Research Centers. It also has given support to ASU's Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) System Research Center, and several projects associated with the center. The recruitment of state university graduates also is a high priority for the company; in 1998 the company hired 59 interns and 35 new graduates from Arizona's public universities.

The award, established in 1996, annually honors outstanding supporters of higher education in Arizona. Regents and former Regents contributed to establish and present the award. Previous recipients include Jim Click, the Flinn Foundation, Katherine and Robert Herberger, Phelps Dodge, Frances B. McAllister, and Donald Soldwedel.

The Arizona Board of Regents governs Arizona's three public universities -- Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and the University of Arizona -- which have a combined enrollment of nearly 104,000 students.

More information about the Regents' Award and the Board of Regents is available on the Board's homepage at http://www.abor.asu.edu
