NAU Presidential Candidates

Dr. Roger W. Bowen is completing his fifth year as President of the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz. SUNY at New Paltz serves approximately 8,000 students and has 1,200 employees, including approximately 600 full and part-time faculty members. Prior to his position at SUNY, Dr. Bowen was Vice President for Academic Affairs at Hollins College from 1992 to 1996. Dr. Bowen formerly was a professor of government at Colby College, where he also served in various administrative capacities, including the Chair of the Department of Government, the Director of the Black Studies Program, the Director of the East Asian Studies Program and Director of Colby-in-Cork (Ireland). Dr. Bowen has been a Research Associate at Harvard University’s Edwin O. Reischauer Institute (Japanese studies) since 1981. Dr. Bowen possesses a bachelor’s degree in political science and East Asia studies from Wabash College, a master’s degree in Japanese studies from the University of Michigan, and a doctorate in political science from the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Owen F. Cargol is President of the University of Maine at Augusta, having assumed the presidency in 1996. The University of Maine at Augusta serves 6,000 students and delivers a range of liberal arts and professional degrees. Dr. Cargol came to the UM from Cleveland State College where he served as President from 1993 to 1996. Formerly, Dr. Cargol served from 1987 to 1993 as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Highline College, a Seattle institution serving 12,500 students. Dr. Cargol earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Louisiana State University, a bachelor’s degree in horticulture and a master’s degree in adult and higher education administration at Oregon State University and a doctorate in higher education administration at The Pennsylvania State University. In 1992, Dr. Cargol held a Fulbright Fellowship to the Federal Republic of Germany.

Dr. Richard Davenport is in his eighth year as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Central Michigan University, a doctoral/research-intensive institution with 18,500 on-campus students and 12,000 off-campus students. Before joining CMU in 1990, he was Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at Western State College of Colorado from 1986 to 1990. Dr. Davenport has held faculty positions in the area of speech pathology and communication disorders at Iowa State University, Saint Cloud State University, and at a tri-college/university consortium in Winona, Minnesota. Dr. Davenport received a bachelor’s degree in speech and hearing disorders from the University of Nebraska, Kearney, a master’s degree in speech and hearing science from Colorado State University, and a doctorate in higher education administration from Iowa State University.

Dr. John D. Haeger is the Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at Northern Arizona University. Before joining NAU in June, 2000, Dr. Haeger served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Towson University from 1995 to 2000. Towson University, located in the Baltimore metropolitan area, has a student population of 16,000 and more than 495 full-time and 300 part-time faculty members. Dr. Haeger’s years at TU were preceded by administrative positions from 1988 to 1995 at Central Michigan University, first as department chair, then as Assistant Vice President for Research and Dean of Graduate Programs, and finally as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Haeger was founding editor of the Michigan Historical Review, a journal specializing in midwestern history and culture. Dr. Haeger attended Loyola University in Chicago where he earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in history, American and European history, and American history, respectively.

Dr. Denise M. Trauth is Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, having been appointed to this position in 1998 after serving a year in this capacity on an interim basis. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a doctoral-research intensive university with an enrollment of 17,000 students. From July 1993 to March 1997, Dr. Trauth was the Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Vice Chancellor for Graduate Programs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Prior to joining the University of North Carolina, Dr. Trauth was the Associate Dean of the Bowling Green State University Graduate College, having previously held faculty positions in telecommunications and speech communication at Bowling Green. Dr. Trauth possesses a bachelor’s degree in English literature from the College of Mount St. Joseph, a master’s degree in journalism from Ohio State University, and a doctorate in mass communication from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Michael A. Wartell is Chancellor of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, a 10,000 student regional campus of Purdue University which serves a ten-county region of northeastern Indiana. IPFW is a comprehensive university offering more than 150 programs, certificate through master’s level. Dr. Wartell was appointed Chancellor in 1994 after having served for a year as the university’s Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. From 1989 to 1993, Dr. Wartell was a Department Manager at Sandia National Laboratories with responsibility for the development and management of educational outreach programs and special technologies. Other positions held by Dr. Wartell include Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Humboldt University from 1984 to 1989, Dean of the College of Letters and Sciences at James Madison University from 1979 to 1984, and Dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Slippery Rock State College from 1978 to 1979. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of New Mexico and a master’s degree and doctorate in physical chemistry from Yale University.
