NAU Student Body President to be Next Student Regent

Wesley J. McCalley, the current Northern Arizona University student body president, has been nominated by Governor Janet Napolitano as the next student Regent.

McCalley will begin a two-year term on July 1, with the first year served as a non-voting Regent and the second year as the voting student Regent.

McCalley, a senior finance major in the College of Business Administration will receive his undergraduate degree in May and begin courses in NAU’s Master of Business Administration program this summer.

While attending NAU, McCalley has participated or been part of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.  He has been active in student government, first as Associated Students of NAU’s Chief of Staff and most recently as student body president for 2002-03.  He also was a resident assistant in the NAU dorm system for two years.

McCalley has been involved in several community service projects, including events for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Flagstaff, United Way, and the American Cancer Society.  He also has participated in the Cancer and AIDS walks, and Community Service Days in Flagstaff.

McCalley graduated from high school in Tucson, where his parents still live.  His mother Quina (pronounced Keena), owns and operates a small jewelry business, and his father, James, is a real estate agent and custodian at the University of Arizona.

The Student Regent is chosen through a rigorous process that begins with candidates applying to the Board of Associated Students of Arizona. The student Board forwards three final candidates to the local student government on campus where the nominees are confirmed and forwarded to the Governor's office. The Governor conducts interviews and nominates one student who must then be confirmed by the Arizona Senate.

Student leaders lobbied for the “apprentice,” or non-voting year to allow Student Regents an extra year to learn about issues facing the Board. While McCalley serves as the non-voting apprentice, Danelle Kelling, a law student at Arizona State University will be the voting Student Regent.  She replaces Matthew Meaker, a law student at the University of Arizona. Student Regents rotate from among Arizona’s three public universities.
